Chain coral, scientifically known as Halysites, is an extinct genus of tabulate coral frequently found as fossils along the shores of Lake Michigan. These fossils are the remains of colonial organisms that built massive reefs over 400 million years ago during the Ordovician and Silurian periods, when a warm, shallow tropical sea covered what is now the Midwest.
